ABOUT THE WORK
In Decay, Marge Ball renders an emotionally charged abstraction that captures the fragile balance between natural beauty and industrial erosion along the River Tyne. Layered with hand-applied rust and broad gestures of acrylic, the surface speaks in both texture and tension, evoking the oxidation of memory, metal, and time. The corrosion isn’t merely material—it’s symbolic, marking the invisible forces that shape coastlines, economies, and histories.

Though formally abstract, Decay resonates as a deep meditation on the remnants of industry embedded in the landscape of the North East. In Ball’s hands, the river becomes a silent witness to environmental stillness, echoing the calm before global ruptures such as the 2004 tsunami, one of the thematic undercurrents that flow through her Environment collection.

The work commands physical presence at over 1.5 metres in height, and yet it whispers rather than shouts—subtle, minimal, and conceptually potent.
