In the portrait “Dylan,” I’ve sought to capture more than just the likeness of a young Labrador; I aimed to convey the innocence and gentle curiosity that puppies possess. Drawn with graphite on 30 x 40 cm paper, the choice of medium and size was integral to depicting the finer details that characterize such a tender stage of life.

Graphite, with its ability to achieve a vast spectrum of tones, allowed me to delicately build up the layers of fur, from the deepest blacks to the soft greys that hint at the play of light across Dylan’s form. The rendering of his eyes, the windows to his young soul, required a gentle touch to reflect the earnest and trusting nature of a companion animal in its formative years.

The pose—Dylan supported by a hand—was chosen to evoke the simple joys of puppyhood, a time when even the smallest things are adventures in themselves. The way the paws wrap around, the tension in the little muscles, and the careful shading around the bone; all these elements work together to bring a realistic and almost tangible quality to the piece.

“Dylan” is an embodiment of the pure joy and the uncomplicated essence of a puppy’s world. Through this piece, I have aimed to offer viewers a moment of peace and a reminder of the uncomplicated affection that animals bring into our lives. It’s a celebration of life’s beginnings, captured through the timeless medium of graphite.
